DCL.... A Little Background Direct Container Line (DCL) was founded in August 1978 to service the ocean transportation needs of Australian importers buying foods from US manufacturers. By taking advantage of the transition in shipping to containerization, DCL was able to offer smaller US exporters the most cost-effective way to ship their goods to international markets. Initial trade service from the West Coast of the US to Australia/New Zealand rapidly expanded to cover the total US and worldwide markets. DCL is now the largest non-vessel operating common carrier (NVOCC). According to figures published in the Journal of Commerce, DCL's export volume in 1996; over 160,000 TEU's placed it as the 6th largest U.S. exporter for that year. In 1989, DCL
received the President's "E" Award for Excellence in Exporting, in honor of

DCL operates 13 offices and 25 receiving terminals in the United States and Canada with branches or subsidiaries in 86 countries around the world.
